Let the Sunshine In: Getting Sunlight Safely for My Mind, Body & Soul ☀️💚

God3ss Aisha

Stepping outside, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin, and taking a deep breath reminds me to slow down.

The sunlight.

The fresh air.

The birds singing their little hearts out before I've even had my coffee. 😂

Sometimes, I need to get outside and let nature remind me that there is still beauty in the world.

But as the seasons change and the days get shorter, I've also been thinking about something important: How can I get the benefits of natural daylight while taking care of my body and protecting my peace?

Let's talk about it!

Sunshine and My Mood ☀️

Have you ever noticed how different you can feel after spending a little time outside on a beautiful day?

Maybe I feel more awake. Maybe I feel like taking a walk. Maybe I feel better sitting outside instead of staring at four walls.

There is a reason daylight matters.

Natural light helps regulate my body's internal clock, which influences my sleep-wake cycle. Changes in daylight hours can affect sleep, energy, and mood, especially for people who experience seasonal affective disorder, commonly called SAD.

And when autumn and winter arrive, the days get shorter. I might spend more time indoors, move less, and feel less motivated to get out and enjoy life.

For some people, these changes are more than the winter blues.

Seasonal affective disorder is a form of depression with a recurring seasonal pattern. Symptoms can include low mood, loss of interest in activities, low energy, changes in sleep or appetite, and difficulty concentrating.

So, while I'm not suggesting that a little sunshine will cure depression, getting outside during the day can be one helpful part of my self-care routine.

My Morning Sunshine Ritual

I don't need to spend hours outside to start being more intentional about daylight.

I can begin with something simple.

🌞 Open the curtains and let natural daylight into my home.

🌞 Enjoy breakfast near a bright window.

🌞 Take a short morning walk, if I'm able.

🌞 Sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

🌞 Spend a few minutes noticing the world around me instead of immediately reaching for my phone.

I love starting my day with a little quiet before the world starts demanding my attention.

No scrolling.

No unnecessary drama.

No checking to see what everybody else is doing.

Just me, the morning light, and a moment to breathe. 😌

Getting daylight outdoors can be particularly helpful for maintaining a regular daily rhythm. I don't have to stare at the sun or deliberately expose my skin to intense UV rays to enjoy being outside.

Getting Sun Safely Is Self-Care Too

Now, my beautiful souls, let's keep it 💯.

I love connecting with nature, but I also know too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage my skin and eyes.

I do not need a sunburn or a tan to enjoy the sunshine!

Here are a few ways I can be sun-smart:

  • Check the UV index. When the UV index is 3 or higher, use sun protection.

  • Wear protective clothing. A wide-brimmed hat and lightweight clothing that covers my skin can help protect me.

  • Protect my eyes. Sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays are important.

  • Seek shade when the sun is strongest. I can still enjoy the outdoors without sitting in direct sunlight.

  • Never look directly at the sun. Sunlight can seriously damage my eyes.

These precautions matter even on cool or cloudy days.

Another important reminder: I don't have to lie in the sun for hours to prove I'm taking care of myself.

Sometimes a short, comfortable outdoor break is enough to help me build a healthier daily routine.

What About Vitamin D?

Vitamin D supports bone health and other bodily functions, and sunlight exposure helps the skin produce it.

But more sunlight isn't automatically better.

Several factors affect how much vitamin D you produce, including skin pigmentation, age, location, season, and other individual circumstances.

I don't need to risk burning my skin to try to get more vitamin D. If I'm concerned about a deficiency, I can talk with a healthcare professional about whether testing or supplementation makes sense for me.

Self-care means learning what my body needs without putting it at unnecessary risk.

When Sunshine Isn't Enough

I want to make one thing clear: I don't have to sunshine my way out of depression.

If my mood consistently drops during certain seasons, I sleep much more than usual, lose interest in things I normally enjoy, withdraw from people, or struggle to manage daily life, I deserve support.

Seasonal affective disorder has established treatment options, including psychotherapy, medication when appropriate, and light therapy. A healthcare professional can help me decide what's suitable for my situation.

A light therapy box isn’t the same as sitting in direct sunlight. Devices intended to treat SAD provide bright light while filtering out UV radiation. Because some eye conditions and medications can affect whether light therapy is appropriate, it's important to check with a healthcare professional before starting—especially if I have an existing eye condition.

Asking for help doesn't mean I've failed at self-care.

It means I'm taking care of myself.

My Sunshine Affirmation ☀️💚

I've been learning that self-care doesn't always require a big production.

Sometimes it's a quiet morning.

Sometimes it's a walk.

Sometimes it's sitting outside and letting my thoughts settle.

Sometimes it's recognizing that I need more support than a lifestyle change alone can provide.

I can appreciate the sunshine without expecting it to solve every problem in my life.

I can enjoy nature while protecting my skin and eyes.

I can listen to my body without judging myself for having difficult days.

And I can remind myself that self-care is not about perfection. It's about making small choices that support my well-being.

So today, I'm reminding myself:

I deserve light.

I deserve rest.

I deserve peace.

I can care for my mind while protecting my body.

I can ask for help when I need it.

And I can appreciate the little moments that make life beautiful.

Sometimes, that means stepping outside, taking a deep breath, and letting the sunshine remind me to slow down. ☀️
