Homemade Mouthwash: A Simple, Natural Addition to Your Oral Care Routine
Godd3ss Aisha
True Story...
Did you know some of the spices sitting in your kitchen can make a refreshing homemade mouth rinse?
I love finding natural ways to care for my body, and this is one of my favorite DIY recipes. While it isn't a replacement for brushing, flossing, or regular dental checkups, it can be a refreshing addition to your daily oral care routine.
Let's take a look at the ingredients.
πΏ Whole Cloves
Whole cloves have been used traditionally for generations in oral care. They have a warm, spicy flavor that helps freshen your breath.
One thing to know...
If you've ever chewed on a whole clove, you know it packs a punch! π
(Side note: Some people chew a clove for temporary tooth discomfort, but if you're experiencing ongoing tooth pain, it's important to see your dentist.)
β Star Anise
Star anise has a unique licorice-like flavor and can add a pleasant freshness to your homemade rinse. It's one of my favorite ingredients because it pairs so well with cloves and cinnamon.
π° Cinnamon Sticks
Besides smelling absolutely amazing, cinnamon gives this rinse a warm, comforting flavor.
Together, these three ingredients create a naturally aromatic mouth rinse that's easy to make at home.
Here's How I Make It
Ingredients
3β9 whole cloves (I like mine strong, so I usually use 9!)
1 whole star anise (or 2 smaller pieces if broken
1 cinnamon stick, snapped in half
Distilled or alkaline water
Tea Pot Method (My Favorite)
Place the cloves, star anise, and cinnamon into your tea infuser.
Bring your water to a boil.
Pour the hot water over the spices.
Let everything steep for 20β30 minutes.
Allow it to cool completely.
Pour it into a clean glass bottle for storage.
Pot Method
Add the spices and water to a pot.
Bring everything to a gentle boil.
Remove from the heat.
Let it steep and cool for 20β30 minutes.
Strain and transfer to a clean glass bottle.
Storage
To keep your rinse fresh, store it in the refrigerator and make small batches that you'll use within a few days.
Some people add a preservative, but I personally prefer simply making fresh batches and keeping them chilled.
A Gentle Reminder
Natural remedies can be wonderful additions to a healthy lifestyle, but they work best alongside good oral hygieneβnot instead of it.
Brush twice a day.
Floss daily.
Visit your dentist regularly.
Think of this homemade mouth rinse as another way to care for yourself, naturally.
If you decide to give it a try, I'd love to hear what you think!
